Controlled Hours |
Mixed from prepared tapes in 1997, man-hours was
essentially a rumination on work and play, free time and controlled
time, conceived rather joyfully during a period of employment
frustration.
Made up of two pieces, filling the two sides of the original tape
release, one side mixed tapes of musical sketches / band jams into a
blurry, bubbling sound concoction... like wandering through a maze of
underground tunnels trying to find music that's playing somewhere,
fruitlessly following the echoes.
The second side was a site location recording of a quiet area of a
production facility, modulated into a 25 minute long, warm, industrial
drone.
Not meant to be overscrutinized, man-hours should be used as an ambient
recording, as Brian Eno defined it. Sound to fill a space, it could be
listened to, or ignored. It should be played at low volumes, and
allowed to seep uneasily into the room.
